vogue australia caused some controversy (both positive and negative) by including a 10-page editorial of plus-sized models. according to fashionologie, this is the first time in its 52-year history that the magazine has ever featured a model of above-average size. one wouldn’t think that [in 2011] this would be ground-breaking, but it is.
i would love to commend vogue australia, but what took it so long? personally, i prefer looking at a curvy shape, and plus-sized models exude a sexiness and comfort about their bodies that you just don’t get from the brooding human hangers of their thinner counterparts. to see this editorial in-person, the september issue is on stands now.
Whether curvy or skinny women are sexier is an irrelevant question—and just the sort of question that the fashion industry perpetuates. The real question here: Why can’t magazines feature standard and plus-size models in the same editorials? I’m sick of segregated plus-size editorials with titles like “Belle Curve.” Stop calling attention to the shape of the models’ bodies. Stop apologizing for the juxtaposition of designer clothes with hips and breasts. Just put the models in the magazine and get over it.

body image is weird here, at least coming from a US perspective. the sizing is all a lot smaller and there aren’t any young fashion brands catering to plus sizes. i haven’t been here that long but that’s what i feel so far. it’s just weird.
